Resting Energy Expenditure Analysis

Your Resting Metabolic Rate

Metabolic rate analysis is a test to determine the amount of energy expended while at rest in a neutrally temperate environment, in the post-absorptive state (meaning that the digestive system is inactive, which requires about twelve hours of fasting). The release of energy in this state is sufficient only for the functioning of the vital organs, such as the heart, lungs, brain and the rest of the nervous system, liver, kidneys, reproductive organs, muscles and skin. Illness, previously consumed food and beverages, environmental temperature, and stress levels can affect one's overall energy expenditure.

Your Resting metabolic rate is measured by gas analysis through either direct or indirect calorimetry.

How It Can Change

Your resting metabolic rate will decrease if you lose muscle, and increase if you gain muscle. Losing fat alone will not lower your resting metabolic rate (and note that you will need to follow a very sensible program probably including weight training to lose fat without losing muscle). However, the amount of energy expended per unit of lean weight does not change.
